The neon work “🍤🔥🥡 (faith, hope, love)” is inspired by countless examples of tattoos with Asian characters with “false” meaning that can be found on the internet. Especially dishes often are tattooed on the skin of people with no asian cultural heritage. Also here the hint in brackets in the title of the work is misleading: the Christian virtues “faith, hope, love” are often translated by people who were socialized in a western culture and market as Asian wisdoms. However, the translation makes no sense in Chinese, nor is there any cultural reference to it. The writing, which actually means “shrimp fried rice”, could rather hang in the window of a restaurant.

The work was created after consultation with Yamu Wang, Lucky Cheng and Xiyao Wang. Thank you!
